WHY CHOOSE RELIGIOUS STUDIES?
RS, Philosophy and Ethics encourages and
develops skills in critical thinking and analytical
writing. We study a balance of secular and
religious theories spanning more than two
millennia; learning how Greek philosophy and
Christianity have shaped our society today,
considering whether or not moral actions are
intrinsically good or if the end justifies the
means, and critically analysing key thinkers
within Christianity who have shaped the
religion today. Students in previous years
have progressed to study English, History
and Theology/Philosophy, commenting that
the essay writing skills developed in RS have
benefited them at university.
HOW IS THE COURSE TAUGHT AND ASSESSED?
The specialists in Theology, Philosophy and
Ethics, will encourage independent study, use
teacher input and direct students towards wider
reading. Assessment consists of 3 exams where
knowledge and ability to evaluate are judged.
Exam-style questions are used throughout the
course.
WHY CHOOSE SOCIOLOGY?
Sociology explores the relationships between
individuals and groups, as well as the structures
and cultures that shape our lives. By learning
about sociology, we can better understand
the complexities of our society, become more
aware of our own beliefs and biases, and gain
a better understanding of how social systems,
organisations, and institutions work. By learning
about the different societies around the world,
we can gain an appreciation for how our own
culture and values influence our behaviour
and decisions. We can also gain a better
understanding of how our beliefs and values
shape the laws and policies of our society
HOW IS THE COURSE TAUGHT AND ASSESSED?
The course is taught through a mix of directed
lessons; small group work; discussion and
student led presentations. Sociology is heavily
literacy based. Expect to read, discuss and
write about Sociological debates in every
lesson. Sociology has it’s own language
expect to spend learning and quizzing on key
terminology. Assessments range from short
answer questions (4, 6 marks) to extended
essays (20-30 marks) on three final examination
papers.

Grade 4 in GCSE English Language
Sociology is definitely my favourite
subject. It’s so interesting being able
to learn about the dynamics behind family
and education; and being able to apply
that to my everyday life. It’s also prompted
me to pursue a career in Sociology, as
it provides great opportunities to help
people in the wider community, due to it’s
relevance! Olivia
