WHY CHOOSE ENGLISH LITERATURE?
WHY CHOOSE FILM STUDIES
You will have the opportunity to read, discuss
and develop a critical understanding of a
wide variety of extraordinary texts from across
a broad historical range. These texts touch
upon themes and areas of human experience
that are universal and timeless. All lovers of
literature know that what we read provides us
with the thinking tools we need for life. This
rich and varied programme of study allows you
to develop core skills of analysis, evaluation,
independent research and extended writing, as
well as an appreciation of the social, cultural
and historical contexts that influence literature.
In Film Studies you study Hollywood films from
the past and the present, as well as a range
of contemporary British films, Global films,
silent cinema and documentaries. Through
exploration of narrative; representation of
characters and ideologies; misé-en-scène and
significant film theory movements, learners
gain a sense of the development of film from
its early years to its still emerging digital
future. Production work is a crucial area and
learners create either a short film or screenplay
alongside an evaluation.

Film studies is such a fun and
interesting course which has allowed
me to develop my knowledge of how
films are made and everything that can be
packed into one. As well as writing essays
on the films you study, you get to make a
film on your own, allowing you to apply
the techniques you have learnt in the films
you study. Ben
