WHY CHOOSE ECONOMICS
WHY CHOOSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE?
Do you want to understand how the prices we
pay for goods and services are determined?
Or how economic policymakers can reduce
poverty, improve the nation’s health and tackle
global issues like climate change? As well as
developing an appreciation of fundamental
principles of economics, you will also hone
your analytical thinking and problem solving
skills. The course examines issues such as the
economic impact of the war in Ukraine; why,
on average, women still earn less than men;
and how the government can provide welfare
payments to citizens without damaging their
incentive to work. Economics A Level is well
regarded by universities due to the rigorous
thinking skills that students are encouraged
to develop. An understanding of economics is
useful for anyone considering a career in the
public, private or voluntary sectors.
Everything that we interact with in the world,
from our everyday conversations to the media,
comes to us through language. How we then
make sense of the world is also through
language; meaning that the person who truly
understands how people use language has
great insight into the world and is therefore in
a powerful and influential position. Choosing
the English Language course allows you to
explore a range of spoken and written texts
and to engage critically with topical and often
controversial issues about how language is
used in our world to represent power and
gender. You will also develop an appreciation
of how our language has changed over time
and how we have acquired the ability to
communicate from birth.
HOW IS THE COURSE TAUGHT AND ASSESSED?
Economics is taught in the context of real
world events. Whilst we teach you the relevant
theory in lessons, it is essential that you have
an interest in current affairs and the willingness
to immerse yourself in the subject. Pre-reading
and research is expected from all students.
SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Grade 5 in GCSE Maths
(Grade 6 is recommended) and
l Grade 5 in GCSE English Language
(Grade 6 is recommended)
I have really enjoyed the real-world
applicability of Economics; and
understanding how concepts and current
world events impact me personally.
Alongside this, I have enjoyed learning
how the UK economy works, as well as the

HOW IS THE COURSE TAUGHT AND ASSESSED?
Two 2 hour and 30 minute exams, each
worth 40%.
Coursework (worth 20%) in which students
conduct a linguistic investigation into an area of
interest.
The course is taught through a mix of directed
lessons, small-group work, discussion and
student-led presentations..

(Grade 6 recommended)
Since beginning English Language,
I’ve enjoyed every minute. Exploring
a wide range of topics, from power,
technology and gender to everyday
conversations: many of which I now find
myself analysing. It’s an influential subject
that is both academically engaging and
largely personal, supported by inspiring
teachers who make all the difference!
