Early entry students
Harry
Tamsin Day
Widening Participation Leader
At The Weald we recognise that some of our
students will have the highest aspirations and may
wish to apply to Oxford or Cambridge universities.
I provide support for those students to give them
the best possible chance of success. Among other
things, this includes one-to-one advice on preparing
for the application process, organisation of practice
interviews and support with writing personal
statements. A key part of my role is supporting
students from under-represented groups in entering.
The Early Entry team at The
Weald were very helpful with my
application to Oxford to study
Computer Science. The Early Entry
Google Classroom was packed
with resources that helped massively with the
process, from start to finish. The team organised
two mock interviews to emulate the real ones;
one on the course and one on my personal
statement. I found both really useful in preparing
for my real interviews.
SUBJECTS: Maths, Physics, Computer Science
EXTRA STRAND: EPQ
SUPER CURRICULAR: Helping run the lower-school
coding club
FUTURE PLANS: University of Warwick - Computer Science
Merry
Frances Elston
MedSoc Leader
MedSoc provides students hoping to study Medicine,
Dentistry and Veterinary Science with support and
guidance. Structured sessions provide insight into
topics such as medical ethics, different course styles
and the expectations of a career in medicine. Entry
into these degree courses is highly competitive,
requiring additional preparation for interviews
and entrance exams as well as needing a superb
application, and support is also given therefore on
an individual basis. Mentoring sessions with students
who have already been successful in gaining a place
at university have also proved invaluable. Students
in MedSoc are motivated to succeed as they are
applying for entry into a career, not only a degree.
We are delighted that a third of our Early
Entry applicants were successful in their
applications to either study at Oxbridge, or
on highly competitive medicine courses this
year.

Early entry support at The Weald
was excellent. I was paired with
a mentor who guided me through
personal statement writing and
interview preparation. We also had
talks from Governors about their
experiences and advice, as well
as having mock interviews with
teachers from other schools who were subject
experts.
SUBJECTS: Economics, Maths, History
EXTRA STRAND: EPQ
SUPER CURRICULAR: Council planning meeting
and debate club.
FUTURE PLANS: University of Exeter - Economics
James
The Weald have supported me
throughout my application for
Mathematics. The weekly sessions
with Dr Brinklow for preparing
for the STEP exams have been
particularly helpful. The staff here
are experienced with Oxbridge
personal statements and are
always happy to lend a helping
hand. The mock interviews were invaluable, as
well as, the constant information about outreach
programs you can join to help you prepare for
your application.
