Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches
(available at HL and SL)
This course is appropriate for students who enjoy the more pure and
abstract elements of mathematics as well as problem solving in real world
contexts. This course contains elements of pure mathematics such as
algebra and trigonometry and fewer applied maths topics in statistics and
modelling than the applications and interpretations course and is slightly
more similar in content to the mathematics A-level. A student who enjoys
algebra and pure mathematics would be well-suited to this course.

The course is o昀昀ered at standard and higher levels. Students wishing
to progress to a university subject requiring A Level maths (e.g. physics,
engineering, mathematics) will usually need to take the HL option.
Higher level maths is a challenging and exciting course which includes
some topics usually studied in the 昀椀rst year of an undergraduate
maths course such as complex numbers, di昀昀erential equations and
Maclaurin series. This course is signi昀椀cantly more advanced than its
SL counterpart and students should be prepared for a challenging but
rewarding experience.

I chose the IB because I had
too many subjects that I
wanted to take at A Level. The IB
allowed me to carry on with
many of my favourite subjects, as
well as study them at di昀昀erent
levels.
“
My favourite aspect about the IB
has been the sense of community
which is there right from day one,
as you are part of a group who
will be on the same journey
together for the next two years.
As well as all the skills gained in
my individual subjects, the IB
has given me the invaluable
skill of time management,
and has helped me learn
how to prioritise.
